Decolonisation, the process by which colonial territories gained independence from European imperial powers, reshaped the world map between roughly 1945 and 1980, producing dozens of new nations. It resulted from the exhaustion of European colonial powers in World War II, the ideological discrediting of racial hierarchy, and long-standing resistance by colonised peoples. Yet the story is considerably more complicated than a straightforward triumph of self-determination.

A crucial and often underacknowledged driver was the United States. America actively encouraged the dismantling of European empires, partly from genuine anti-colonial principle rooted in its own revolutionary history, but primarily for strategic and commercial reasons. Weakening its European rivals (Britain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium) opened new markets to American trade and investment, and reduced the geopolitical weight of the old imperial powers. Simultaneously, the United States sought to cultivate newly independent nations as nationalist allies against Soviet communism, funding political movements, military juntas, and client governments across the developing world. The Soviet Union pursued mirror-image objectives, backing liberation movements and socialist governments wherever it could. Decolonisation thus became, from its very inception, an arena of superpower competition rather than genuine liberation.

The cruel irony is that both powers presiding over decolonisation were themselves colonial empires in all but name. The United States exercised dominance over Latin America, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia through military intervention, economic dependency, and the propping-up of compliant regimes. The Soviet Union maintained an empire of satellite states across Eastern Europe and Central Asia, suppressing independence movements in Hungary (1956), Czechoslovakia (1968), and Afghanistan (1979) with overwhelming force. Both superpowers preached self-determination whilst practising hegemony, and this contradiction, baked into the post-war order, poisoned the promise of genuine independence for much of the decolonising world. What had been European colonialism was replaced, in many cases, by a subtler but equally coercive superpower patronage. Far from ending imperial competition, decolonisation recast it: the Cold War was in large part a contest to fill the vacuums left by retreating European empires.

The consequences were mixed and often tragic. Colonial boundaries drawn without any regard for ethnic, linguistic, or historical realities created internally fractured, conflict-prone states where rival groups, previously held in check by colonial force, now competed for control of the new national machinery. These ethnic divisions were frequently exploited and inflamed by Cold War patrons backing competing factions. Economic structures built entirely for resource extraction left new nations without the infrastructure, institutions, or professional classes needed for self-governance. A cascade of nationalist conflicts, military coups, and civil wars followed across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, in several cases hardening into genocidal violence, as in Nigeria, Cambodia, and Rwanda. India's partition triggered the displacement of 12 to 15 million people and the deaths of up to 2 million. Africa's Year of 1960 saw seventeen nations become independent in a single year, yet many were immediately drawn into Cold War proxy conflicts. South Africa's apartheid regime endured until Nelson Mandela's election in 1994.

The long-term legacies remain central to global politics. Economic inequality between formerly colonised and colonising nations has not been overcome. Institutional fragility, debt dependency, and the cultural disruption of imposed languages and education systems persist. Nationalist conflicts and ethnic divisions seeded in the decolonisation era continue to generate instability. Demands for reparations, restitution of looted cultural artefacts, and honest historical reckoning are growing. Decolonisation, in short, did not end empire: it dispersed, disguised, and in some respects intensified it.
